3. The trap of “free” software: Hidden costs to include

Self-hosting a critical tool like n8n means taking responsibility for tasks that the cloud service handles:

A. Administration and maintenance hours (the largest real cost)

Initial setup: Configuring Ubuntu Server, Docker Compose, secure environment variables, automatic SSL certificates with Let's Encrypt and a UFW firewall takes between 2 and 5 technical hours.
Monthly maintenance: n8n updates, Linux kernel patches and backup checks take between 1 and 3 hours a month.

B. External backups and persistence
